민족문제연구소는 세계사상 유례없이 가혹했던 일제 식민지배의 실상을 고발하고 일제잔재를 청산하려는 취지에서, 지속적으로 식민지 시기와 관련한 기획 전시회를 개최해 왔습니다. 1995년 ‘일제침략과 저항의 역사’전을 시작으로 매년 한 차례 이상 열린 전시회는, 일제침략·독립운동·역사왜곡·친일문제·강제동원·야스쿠니신사·시베리아억류자·민중생활·문화예술 등 다양한 분야에서 시의성 있는 주제를 택해 올바른역사인식의 확산에 기여해 왔습니다.
올해 우리는 경술국치 100주년을 맞았습니다. 오롯이 한 세기가 지났건만 제국주의 침략에 대한 가해자와 피해자 간 인식의 간극은 여전히 좁혀지지 않고 있습니다. 한심하게도 너무나도 뻔한 조약의 불법성을두고 갑론을박하고 있습니다. 그러나 아무리 합법을 강조한다 하여도 반인도적 제국주의 침략의 본질은 달라지지 않을 것입니다. 침략과 전쟁 책임에 대한 일본의 근원적인 성찰이 필요해 보이는 부분입니다. 분명한 것은 지금까지와 같은 진정성이 없고 실천이 뒤따르지 않는 미사여구로는 피해국과 피해자들을오히려 분노하게 만들 것이며, 이는 일본은 물론 아시아 전체의 불행으로 이어질 것이라는 사실입니다.
일본의 명확한 역사인식과 우리 내부의 각성을 촉구하기 위해, 민족문제연구소는 강제병합100년의 의미를 되새겨보는 의미 있는 전시를 마련하였습니다. 이번 전시에서는 개항기를 포함하여 병합에 이르는 일제침략의 전사에서부터 식민통치의 잔혹성이 극에 달했던 전시총동원체제기에 이르기까지 식민지시대 전 시기를 조망하고, 아울러 한일시민사회의 인권, 평화, 미래를 위한 연대활동도 소개하고 있습니다. 전시에 출품된 400여점의 자료들은 일제 식민지 체험이 없는 세대에게는 매우 생소한 것이기는 하지만, 일제 식민지배의 야만성과 당시 우리 민족의 ‘노예적 상황’을 생생하게 일깨워준다는 점에서 어떤 역사 교과서보다 충격적인 메시지를 전해줍니다.
‘거대한 감옥 식민지에 살다’ 특별기획전은 강제병합 100년을 돌아보는 가장 의미 있는 기획으로 언론의 주목을 받았으며, 개막 직후부터 연일 국내외 관람객들로 성황을 이루는 등 관심이 집중되고 있습니다. 이 같은 호응에 힘입어, 서대문형무소 역사관의 서울 전시에 이어 전국 순회가 예정되어 있으며, 내년 일본 초청 순회전시도 준비 중에 있습니다. 전시 일정이 장기화함에 따라 보다 많은 사람들이 그 내용을 공유하고 나아가 역사 교육 자료로 활용할 수 있도록, 약 800여개의 도판과 자세한 해설 그리고 주변 역사 사실을 덧붙여 이 책자를 간행하게 되었습니다.
나라를 빼앗긴 때로부터 100년의 세월이 흘렀습니다. 해방을 맞은 지도 65년이 지났습니다. 기나긴 시간이 주어졌건만 반성과 화해의 길은 멀어 보입니다. 아직도 식민지배와 침략전쟁의 모진 상흔은 우리 곁에실존하고 있습니다. 남북은 여전히 분단된 채 냉전의 미로를 헤매고 있으며, 동아시아의 평화는 요원해 보입니다. 일본정부는 과거청산에 소극적인 태도로 일관하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 교과서 왜곡이나 영토문제 등으로 기화기 닿을 때마다 도발을 되풀이합니다.
그러나 한편에서는, 제국주의 시대의 유산과 과감히 결별하고 인류사회의 보편적 가치가 존중받는 밝은 내일을 기약하기 위한, 한일 시민사회의 진지한 노력도 계속되고 있습니다. 각국의 위정자들이 제대로 동아시아의 미래를 설계할 수 없다면, 이제 시민사회가 주체로 나서 과거사에 대한 상호간의 공감대를 넓혀나가고 적극적으로 새로운 관계를 열어가는 역사행동을 본격적으로 전개해야 할 시점에 와 있다고 봅니다.
이 책이 지난 세기 전반 한국을 비롯한 동아시아 전체가 겪었던 불행했던 광기의 역사를 재조명함으로써,올바른 과거사 청산과 치유 그리고 화해의 길에 작은 디딤돌이 되기를 기대합니다.

2. Requirements:
Please take into consideration that we only accept qualifying returns but not exchanges. Refunds are issued once the returned products clear our inspection.
1) An item is eligible for cancellation if:
-you posted a Return request within 24 hours of payment and your order is still under “Pending” status (if your order is under “Preparing Shipment” status, please contact our customer service center) or
-the order is delayed for more than 10 days since payment and you have not received any notification regarding the delay; or
-the ordered item is out of stock.
2) We accept return(s) if:
-you receive a product different from your order; or
-you receive a defective product.
**Return Instructions
(1) Post a return request on our Return forum within three days of receipt. You are required to attach the photos of the received product(s) and include the item code, the order number, and the reason for the return.
(2) A customer service representative will be in contact to assist you by email or phone.
(3) Items returned must be in their original condition, which includes tags and any packaging. Also, you need to include a note of your order number, name, and user ID.

*Please note that EVEN the defective/incorrect item(s) must be returned with all of the tags and labels intact. The item(s) must be sent in their original packaging and unworn.

* Shipping fee for any return caused by our fault will be paid by the company. However, if EMS’ cash on delivery is not possible then you can scan the return receipt and either mail it with the item to return or post an image of it on the forum. The shipping fee will be refunded once the returned item has arrived.
3) We do not accept return(s) if:
-you are returning the items just because you changed your mind (on size, color, etc.)

The following items are not considered defective:

4) If there is a missing item from your order:
