<서 문>
이 책을 구술한 허은 여사는 1915년 아홉 살 어린 나이에, 만주로 망명한 허씨 일문을 따라 만주 영안현으로 이주했다. 열여섯 살이던 1922년 고성 이씨 집안으로 출가하여 1932년 시조부 석주 이상룡 선생의 서거로 귀국할 때까지, 석주 선생과 시아버지 동구 이준형 선생, 그리고 남편 이병화를 뒷바라지하며 만주독립운동의 현장에서 온갖 고난을 함께하였다. 이를 바탕으로 역사책에서는 접할 수 없는 생생한 회고담을 남겨 1995년 7월『아직도 내 귀엔 서간도 바람소리가』라는 제목으로 초간되었다.
이 책에는 매년 8월 29일 국치일에 학교 운동장에 모여 망국을 주제로 한 연극을 보고 국치일 노래를 목 놓아 불렀던 어린 시절에 대한 추억, 열여섯 나이에 영안현 철령허에서 화전현 완령허까지 아버지와 시아버지를 모시고 남편과 함께 이천팔백 리를 꼬박 열이틀 걸려 시댁에 도착한 일, 이청천 신숙 황학수 이범석 등 당대의 지사들이 참석한 서로군정서 회의에 대한 목격담, 석주 선생이 임시정부 국무령을 사임하고 상해에서 돌아올 때 변복·변장하여 왜경의 감시망을 뚫고 무사히 도착한 일화, 석주 선생 서거 후 귀향길에 중국군 패잔병들에게 갖은 곤욕을 치른 끝에 선생의 유해를 화전현에 가매장하고 밤길을 타고 어렵게 귀환한 비사 등 독립운동 명가의 역경을 짐작하게 해주는 눈물겨운 증언들이 낱낱이 담겨있다. 1932년 허은 여사는 ‘고택제향(古宅祭香)에 호화반석(豪華磐石)’ 같은 고성 이씨 가문의 종부(宗婦)로서 ‘이역만리(異域萬里)에서 풍찬노숙(風餐露宿)’하다가 안동 임청각으로 귀향했지만, 가산은 독립운동에 이미 소진한 뒤라 시부모 봉양에도 어려움을 겪을 정도로 빈한한 처지에 놓이게 되었다.
1945년 그토록 염원했던 해방은 이루어졌으나 조국은 남북으로 분단되었으며 독립운동세력은 어처구니없게도 탄압과 홀대의 대상이 되고 말았다. 6.25전쟁의 소용돌이 속에서 남편마저 유명을 달리하자 가세는 더욱 기울어져 갔다. 그러나 허은 여사는 고립무원의 지난한 처지에서도 좌절을 딛고 일어서 7남매를 올곧게 키우는 데 힘썼다. 그러던 중 1962년 석주 선생께 건국훈장 독립장이, 1990년 시아버지께 건국훈장 애국장이 남편에게 건국훈장 독립장이 추서되었고, 아울러 같은 해 일가인 이승화 이봉희 이상동 이광민 이운형 이형국 선생도 독립유공자로 인정받아 훈장이 추서되었다. 대한민국 최고의 독립운동 명문으로 공인되었지만 안살림을 전적으로 책임졌던 허은 여사는 서훈의 영예도 사적에 기록되는 영광도 누리지 못했다. 그러나 그는 도리어 “지나온 구십 평생 되돌아봐도 여한은 없다. 그저 하루하루 연명한 것이 오늘에 이른 것이다. 고달픈 발자국이었긴 하나 큰일하신 어른들 생각하면 오히려 부끄러울 뿐이다.”라며 겸손해했다.
2008년 초 허은 여사의 다섯째 아들인 이항증 선생이 고인의 회고록『아직도 내 귀엔 서간도 바람소리가』 개정판을 민족문제연구소에서 내면 어떻겠냐는 의향을 비쳤다. 이항증 선생은 연구소 2대 이사장을 지낸 독립운동가 고 조문기 선생과 교분이 깊었고 1999년부터 회원으로 가입하여 연구소 활동을 적극 지지 성원해 온 인연도 있다. 연구소는 보기 드문 독립운동 증언록인 이 책을 재출간하기로 결정하였으며, 기록자인 변창애 선생도 흔쾌히 동의하여 출판계약이 이루어졌다. 진작 작업을 끝내야 했으나, 연구소의 『친일인명사전』 편찬사업 등 여러 가지 사정으로 인해 제작이 미루어지다가 이제야 개정판을 내놓게 되었다.
허은 여사의 구술체를 가능한 한 살리는 것을 편집원칙으로 정하고, 지명과 인명 등 문헌자료와 사실관계에 비추어 잘못된 부분만을 바로잡았으며 의미 전달이 불명확한 곳은 현대어법에 맞게 약간 손질했다. 초간본에 실린 사진화보와 추가로 발굴된 관련자료를 본문 안으로 배치했으며, 독자의 이해를 돕기 위해 주요 독립운동가들에 대한 간단한 이력을 편집자 주로 처리했다. 또 이항증 선생이 쓴 「나라사랑을 실천한 충절의 현장 임청각」을 부록으로 편성했다.
올해는 경술국치 100주년이 되는 해이다. 고난과 극복으로 점철된 우리 근현대사를 되새겨보게 하는 시점에 뜻 깊은 책을 간행하게 되어 연구소로서도 보람이 크다. 이 책이 독립운동을 폄하하고 일제의 식민지배를 미화하는 등 사회 일각에서 자행되고 있는 역사왜곡을 바로잡는 데 도움이 되었으면 하는 바람이다.

-the order is delayed for more than 10 days since payment and you have not received any notification regarding the delay; or
-the ordered item is out of stock.
2) We accept return(s) if:
-you receive a product different from your order; or

**Return Instructions
(1) Post a return request on our Return forum within three days of receipt. You are required to attach the photos of the received product(s) and include the item code, the order number, and the reason for the return.
(2) A customer service representative will be in contact to assist you by email or phone.
(3) Items returned must be in their original condition, which includes tags and any packaging. Also, you need to include a note of your order number, name, and user ID.
